What Is Imperial Mochi?

Mochi is made from mochigome (Japanese glutinous rice) — pounded into a smooth, elastic dough and shaped into soft, round balls. Formosa Yay’s Imperial Mochi uses a premium glutinous rice shell with a generous taro filling: taro is steamed until soft, mashed, and combined with sugar and a touch of cooking oil into a smooth, velvety paste. The result is a mochi that’s mildly sweet, creamy, and deeply satisfying.

Flavor & Texture

  • 🌰 Taro filling: Mild, naturally sweet, with hints of vanilla and a faint nuttiness — reminiscent of sweet potato but lighter and more refined. Smooth, velvety, and creamy
  • 🍚 Glutinous rice shell: Tender and gently chewy — springy and elastic with a pleasant resistance that gives way slowly. Dusted in starch to prevent sticking
  • Together: The creamy taro filling contrasts beautifully with the chewy shell — melting softly on the tongue while the mochi provides satisfying chew
  • ❄️ Best chilled: Serving chilled enhances the chew of the shell and keeps the filling cool and smooth

How to Enjoy

  • Serve chilled or at room temperature — remove from refrigerator 5–10 minutes before eating for the best texture
  • Pair with a cup of hot tea — the classic Taiwanese mochi pairing
  • Enjoy in unhurried bites — mochi is a dessert meant to be savored slowly

Perfect For

  • 🍡 Mochi lovers: Premium Taiwanese Imperial Mochi with a generous, creamy taro filling — a step above standard mochi
  • 🌰 Taro fans: The mild, nutty sweetness of taro in a classic mochi format
  • 🎁 Gifting: A beautifully presented Taiwanese sweet — great for gift boxes, Mid-Autumn, or any occasion
  • Tea pairing: The ideal accompaniment to oolong, jasmine, or any Chinese tea
