The story of Khong Guan begins not in a factory, but with two brothers and a dream. In 1935, Chew Choo Keng and Chew Choo Han left their village in Fujian, China, to seek their fortune in Singapore. After more than a decade of hard work, their big break came after World War II, when Chew Choo Han chanced upon old, war-damaged biscuit-making machines being sold as scrap. With determination and mechanical ingenuity, he bought them and rigged up a semi-automated production line using bicycle chains and an improvised brick oven.
That ingenuity led to the founding of the Khong Guan Biscuit Factory in 1947 at 18 Howard Road. What started as a small local operation grew quickly: through the 1950s and 1960s Khong Guan expanded across Southeast Asia, and by 1986 it had become a market leader in the U.S. and the first Asian biscuit manufacturer to run TV and newspaper ads there.
